This station validates safe, evidence-based Foley catheter insertion technique using a male or female simulation model. Observers will assess sterile field setup and maintenance, correct procedural sequence, and post-insertion care and verbalize documentation elements aligned with agency policy and professional standards.
Indwelling urinary catheters carry risk for catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Strict adherence to sterile (aseptic) technique during preparation, insertion, and immediate post-insertion care is essential to reduce infection risk. Maintaining a continuous sterile field, minimizing contamination opportunities, and completing a correct securement and drainage setup are core safety requirements for this competency.
If you do not feel fully confident in this skill, please review the training videos and procedure materials in advance. Arrive ready to perform the procedure from memory, verbalizing key steps as you work. Gloves, kits, and supplies will be available at the station.
You may be assigned to either a male or female simulation for your validation. The expected technique and sterile requirements apply equally to both models.
Validation process: If the first attempt is not satisfactory, you’ll be given the opportunity to review the procedure materials located here, and return for a second attempt during your session (as time allows). If still not satisfactory, you’ll be scheduled for 1:1 remediation on November 19, 2025 between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, per the standard process.
