FIT Testing: November 2025 Validation
N95 respirators protect both staff and patients from airborne hazards only when they form a tight seal to the face.
Annual FIT testing confirms that the specific model and size of respirator used in patient care creates an
effective seal for each employee. This validation ensures compliance with OSHA, CDC, and Tufts Medicine Care at Home
respiratory protection policies.
Facial Hair & Seal Requirements
- Clean-shaven where the respirator seals. Beards, stubble, goatees, or facial hair that cross the sealing
surface prevent an adequate seal and cannot be worn during FIT testing or while using an N95 respirator.
- Acceptable: neatly trimmed mustache or hair that does not interfere with the seal.
- Remove facial piercings or accessories that affect the fit, and secure long hair so straps lay flat.
- A user seal check must be performed each time the respirator is donned.
What to Expect at the Station
- Screening: Verification of readiness for testing and review of any medical clearance requirements.
- Testing: Qualitative (Bitrex/Saccharin) or quantitative method depending on available equipment and policy.
- Assignment: You’ll be fitted for the appropriate respirator model and size and receive documentation of completion.
- Coaching: Demonstration of proper donning, doffing, and seal check technique.
How to Prepare
- Avoid eating, drinking (except water), chewing gum, smoking, or vaping for 15 minutes before qualitative testing.
- Arrive clean-shaven in the seal area and avoid lotions or makeup that may interfere with the seal.
- Bring prescription or protective eyewear normally worn during patient care to confirm respirator compatibility.
If you arrive with facial hair crossing the seal line, the FIT test cannot be completed. In this instance, we will need to discuss the appropriateness of using a PAPR in the event you require this level of respiratory protection.
