Healthy Lungs - Breathing In

In a healthy lung, air flows freely into the
windpipe (trachea), through the airways
(bronchial tubes), and to the air sacs
(alveoli) located deep within the lungs.

The diaphragm is a large muscle
beneath the lungs that moves down to
expand the chest and to draw air into
the lungs.

The air sacs (alveoli) are elastic and
expand easily like blowing up a balloon.

Oxygen from the air passes through
the air sacs and into the blood vessels.
The blood then carries the oxygen to
all parts of the body.
